Sample Scored Papers

The following papers, scores and comments range from kindergarten to high school. Two sets of scores by two independent raters are shown for the analytical, six trait scoring. The comments are detailed in the effort to illustrate the issues raters typically discuss during a calibration. Our usual comments are not so lengthy and involved.

The Common Core proficiency check is a separate evaluation based on the Common Core writing standards and applicable language standards for the grade level. Please note: Only those standards that are demonstrated in the paper we receive can be evaluated. If the piece does not include evidence of a given standard—for instance, L.5.2a (commas in a series), it is labeled as “not evident in this writing.” A standard marked as “needs work” means that either the standard was visibly demonstrated to be in error, or that the standard was omitted when called for.
